Should I remove my hard drive before sending my laptop for repair?

THE SHORT ANSWERON FILE · 2026-10-22

If the repair has nothing to do with the drive (a screen, keyboard, hinge or battery) and your laptop lets you take it out easily, yes: a laptop without its drive has nothing of yours on it. Tell the shop and note it on the job sheet. But many modern laptops have the storage soldered to the board, some repairs need the drive to test the machine, and a shop may want to boot Windows to check its work. When the drive has to stay: back up first, move your most private files off, give the technician a separate account, and keep a sealed record of the visit so you can see exactly what was touched.

REMOVE IT IF YOU CAN · RECORD THE VISIT IF YOU CANNOT
01

When removing it makes sense

The fault is clearly elsewhere, the drive comes out with a few screws, and you can do it without voiding a warranty. Keep the drive somewhere safe and dry, and do not hand it to anyone else.

02

When it does not

Soldered storage, which is common in thin laptops; repairs to the drive, the board or the operating system; and warranty repairs where the manufacturer asks for the device as it is. Wiping the drive is another option, but a simple format often leaves files recoverable, so it needs a proper reset and a backup you trust.

03

If the drive stays in

  1. 01

Back up and check the backup

Repairs sometimes wipe drives by accident.

  2. 02

Move your most private files off

Onto an external drive that stays with you.

  3. 03

    Separate account for the technician

Not your password, not your signed in apps.

  4. 04

    Record the visit

So you know what was opened and copied, not just guess.
